Importance of Having a Domain

More than 2.4 billion people use the internet every day, and about 90 per cent of them have purchased something or reached out to a company online.

If your business doesn’t have a proper domain name and website yet, we strongly suggest you set them up now. In this day and age, the people you want to reach are online and it is easier and cheaper to find them through this medium compared with other forms of advertising.

You are missing out on a lot if you have neglected your online presence. It is now second nature to register a domain and build a website once a business is established. Some people even secure domain names early on -- even if the business is just a mere idea -- to make sure that no one will beat them to it.

Picking Your Domain Name

Your domain name creates a strong web presence, adds credibility to your business and reinforces your brand. If possible, you want to make sure that your domain name reflects your brand for the following reasons:

  1. It enforces brand credibility
  2. It is easier for customers to find you
  3. It gives your business added value

Your choice of domain name impacts your website’s success in search engine optimisation, social media marketing and much more.

One of the criteria search engines look at in determining search results is the website’s domain name. Other criteria are the website content and its relevance to the search. Your domain name should be related to your brand and/or product. Also consider the following:

Length Make your domain easy to remember. Customers should be able to jot it down quickly or enter it onto the search bar with ease. Avoid hyphens if possible. According to research, Google sees hyphens as negative signals/classifiers.

Pronunciation Your domain should be easy to pronounce so that people could share it more fluidly in conversations. You want to avoid this conversation: “I found this really cool site that sells affordable yoga mats. It’s called yuleolulla – never mind, just Google yoga mats and maybe you’ll find it.”

Spelling There is a term for purposely registering an incorrectly spelled domain name, it’s called typosquatting, commonly known as URL hijacking, a sting site or a fake URL. Owners of these fake websites rely on people’s mistakes to make pay-per-click revenue. You don’t want to be associated with them, so check and double-check your domain name before registering.

Registering Your Domain

While it’s tempting to publish your site through a free hosting site, keep in mind that you’ll get extensions to your URL that aren’t related to your business. This might deter people from clicking the link to your site as it may appear shady and spammy.

The domain may not give customers as much confidence as the domain

Found a domain name you want to register? It’s time to pick an extension. Aside from .com, there are plenty of other extensions available: .org, .net, .tv, .biz, .info, etc. While some of these extensions may be cheaper than the .com variation, go for .com. “The internet has been a part of our culture for a very long time now and dot-com is what people are accustomed to,” according to INC.

If you are primarily serving a specific country, consider using a country-specific .com domain. For example:

For a small fee (usually paid annually), you can publish your domain through a professional and registered company. They will register the domain name for you and, if you want, they can manage and host it for you.

You own the domain for a period of 12-24 months and if you don’t renew it, someone else can take it. Having your domain registered through a reputable company prevents this from happening by making sure you are aware of your registration’s expiry and arranging annual renewals. This gives you one less thing to worry about, leaving you more time to focus on your business.
